Canada joins USA on Lake Erie

Long-distance relationships are hard. Even being a few counties apart is difficult here in the UK, but think about completely different countries! This is exactly what it was like for Lisa and Chad. They both met 5 years ago in Las Vegas at a Halloween club party. Lisa’s outfit was a yellow crayon while Chad’s was a Canadian Mountie officer. They hit it off straight away and stayed in touch. The downside, Chad was from Canada while Lisa was in the US in Chicago.

After about 3 years of a long-distance relationship, Chad was able to get US citizenship and moved to Chicago with Lisa. Shortly after he proposed! They set a date and got married at the Catawba Island Club in Port Clinton, Ohio. I’m sure you’ll love this beautiful wedding and gain loads of inspiration from all the unique touches!

Your love story

Lisa: “Chad and I met in Las Vegas 5 years before we got married. We met at Tao Nightclub and only spent a half an hour together before our friends were ready to leave. We spent several days trying to coordinate plans to meet up but weren’t able to make it work until 5 am the night before I was going back to Ohio. We met for breakfast at Caesars Palace both in our Halloween costumes from the night. Chad was a Canadian Mountie (since he is from Toronto) and I was a Yellow Crayon. He gave me a kiss on the cheek and said he would see me again.”

“We dated long distance for 3 years before Chad was able to move from Toronto to Chicago, where I had relocated to. I flew to Toronto to help him pack, and right before we were about to leave in an extremely full Uhaul, he proposed in the parking lot where we had spent countless days saying excited hellos and sad goodbyes during our long distance relationship. He said he had his whole life packed in this Uhaul to move his life with me, and that he wanted to spend the rest of our lives together.”

How did you arrange your wedding?

“We both would make a list to figure out what needed to be done, and then we both took on different tasks that we were in charge of. For example, Chad was in charge of the DJ, suits for his groomsmen and table names which were pictures. I was in charge of the flowers, hair/make-up and hotel blocks.”

“We would do some of the planning together like food tasting, picking our readings and songs. But we found splitting up the tasks and each doing it when we had time helped things go much smoother.”

What did you both wear?

“My dress was designed by Alvina Valenta that I got from Bella Bianca in Chicago. Chad wore a navy custom-designed suit that was made by his Uncle Roy Tamura and given to him as a gift from Roy and Kelly Tamura.”

What venues did you choose?

“Our ceremony was at St. Joseph’s in Marblehead, Ohio which is the church we attend when we are spending time at my parents lakehouse.”

“Our reception was at Catawba Island Club, we loved the idea of a venue right on the water with an amazing view of the sunset.”

Was the day how you imagined?

“Some things were how I imagined, but much of the day was not. We had some really fun unexpected memories like a bridal party push up contest before the reception and a guest splitting their pants open from dancing.”

“The one thing I would have done differently was to try to have everything done before the weekend started. I had to write out cards to my bridal party and our bride and groom speech last minute in a rush rather than being able to enjoy everything going on.”

What advice would you give to other couples?

“Pick a few things that you want to focus on that are important to you, and stick to those. It is so easy to get overwhelmed with all the ideas you find. Also, there will be things that go wrong on your wedding day. Just know it won’t go exactly how you planned, but that is ok! My sister was my maid of honor and ended up in the emergency room with 10 stitches and a broken toe. She made it back for the last few songs and everyone celebrated her return.”

Where did you go for your honeymoon?

“We spent 2 weeks in Europe. We visited Santorini in Greece, Positano, Rome, Florence and Venice in Italy and also Munich in Germany. We had never been to Europe so wanted to take advantage of the time off. Santorini was an incredibly beautiful place that we spent 5 days relaxing. We loved sightseeing in Italy and the ended our honeymoon at Oktoberfest in Munich which gave us some great variety for our trip.”
